Welcome to our latest article mind blowing facts about Earth. We are studying other planets but do we know about our Earth.
Did you know our Earth is not a perfect sphere? That we are rocketing around the sun with a speed of 67,000 mph? That most of the freshwater is in ice form in Antarctica?
Our home, Earth is the third planet from the Sun and the only one known to support an atmosphere with free oxygen, oceans of liquid water on the surface.
|Distance from Sun||92.96 million mi|
|Polar Diameter||12,714 km|
|Volume||260 cubic miles|
|Mass||5.972 × 10^24 kg|
|Number of Moons||1|
|Orbital Period||265.24 days|
Not like other planets whose name is placed on Greek or Roman deities, but the name “earth” comes from a Germanic word, which means “the ground“.
And It is the only object in the known universe which has life and holds water in its three states – solid, liquid and gas.
You may feel like you’re sitting steady but you’re actually moving with fast speed. This also depends on where you are on the globe in equator or pole; you could be spinning through space at 1,000 miles per hour.
Earth’s volume– 260 billion cubic miles. And it is the 5 largest planet according to its size.
And the Earth isn’t just spinning: It’s also moving around the sun at107,826 km (67,000 miles) per hour.
The driest place on Earth is not in the desert but the McMurdo Dry Valleys in Antarctica. It has not rained for 2 million years and the wind speed also can even reach up to 320 kph or 200 mph. –Source
Do you know that 99% of gold on the Earth is in its core? So we can say that we have a golden core.
But there is much gold on its crust at the bottom of the Earth’s oceans, there can be 20 million tons of gold.
The only problem by which nobody’s attempted to get the gold because it is extremely diluted. You will get just a gram of gold in a hundreds million tons of water.
Our Earth is mostly iron, oxygen and silicon
lIf we separate the Earth into groups of material, then we will get 32.1 % iron, 30.1% oxygen, 15.1% silicon, and 13.9% magnesium.
Of course, most of this iron is actually at the core of the Earth. If you could actually get down and take its sample, it would be 88% iron. Around 47% of the Earth’s crust consists of oxygen.
Astronomers of old times thought that the Earth was the center of the universe and the sun as well as all other planets orbited around Earth.
The surface temperature on the Sun’s surface and in Earth’s core is the same, that is about 5,500 degrees Celsius (9,900 degrees Fahrenheit).
Do you know that in only one year, 40,000 tons of space dust falls on our planet. It is made up of material like oxygen, nickel, iron, carbon and other elements also.
Only wind transports 40 million dust every year from the Sahara desert to Amazon.
The shape of the Earth is actually not a sphere but closer to a squashed sphere. It’s fatter in the middle where gravity pushes to create a bulge.
Each time when you look up to the sky and you are actually looking at a sun in another galaxy. And as If you were a person from another planet and looking back at our Solar system, you would see our Sun as a star.
Do you know that our planet is recycled? Earth’s rock cycle transforms the igneous rocks to sedimentary rocks and to metamorphic rocks and back again. But not like the perfect cycle.
Death Valley, CA, is hottest which recorded the temperatures of 134 degree Fahrenheit in July 1913.
Earth’s moon looks rather like dead or inactive but we say them “moonquakes”, or like “earthquakes” on the moon, keep things just a bit shook up.
But, these quakes are less common and less intense than those of Earth.
There are more than 20,000 only men made objects revolving around the Earth in which only 8,615 of them are human-made satellites.
According to an estimate, there are 8.7 million species of life ever on Earth, in which 99 per cent of the species have now become extinct.
–The Earth is not actually round in shape; but it is geoid. This simply means that the rounded shape has a little towards the equator. So what causes its shape geoid?
This happened because of the continuous rotation of the Earth, which became causes of bulge around the equator.
Scientists believe that life just not only developed but adapted and also thrived on Eaect distance from the Sun and the gravitational effects from the Moon on the planet.
About 4.5 billion years ago, our Solar system settled into the format that we see today. It is believed that Earth formed when gravity began pulling all dust and swirling gas together, and the Earth became the third planet from the sun. Earth is the biggest among the terrestrial planets.

The Earth is made up of four layers- Crust , Mantle, outer and inner core., Beginning with its inner core, then the outer core, next the mantle, and finally the crust.
The uppermost layer crust have range from 5–70 kilometres (3.1–43.5 mi).
The thin parts of the crust are below the ocean basins (5–10 km) and are composed of dense (mafic) iron magnesium silicate igneous rocks, like basalt.
The thicker crust is continental crust on which we are standing and it is less dense. And it is composed of (felsic) sodium potassium aluminium silicate rocks, like granite.

The second layer Earth’s mantle extends to a depth of 2,890 km, making it the thickest layer.
Mantle is divided into upper and lower mantle separated by transition zone. The mantle is composed of silicate rocks.
The innermost layer of Earth is Earth’s core. It has solid part called inner core and a liquid part called outer core. Its temperature varies from 4400 to 6000.
The inner core of the Earth is first detected by seismology and it is a solid sphere about 1,216 km (760 mi) in radius. It is believed to be made up of iron–nickel alloy. And have a temperature almost similar to the Sun’s surface, about 5778 K (5505 °C)
The outer core is a liquid layer about 2,260 km thick. It is also made of iron and nickel. Its outer boundary is 2,890 km beneath the Earth’s surface and transition between the inner core and outer core is nearly 5,000 km beneath the Earth’s surface.
As many scientists think that water was delivered to the Earth by comets and asteroids as it was forming and that much of the water was inside the planet and then it came up to the surface while volcanic activity.
A day on our Earth is not 24 hrs long.
A day is only the period of time during which Earth spins 360 degrees on its axis. It takes exact 23 hours 56 min and 4 sec to complete one rotation.
However during that time the earth also moves a bit in its orbit. So even after a 360-degree turn, the Sun is not on the same point on earth as it was at the beginning of the spin. But , It is not the exact noon of the next day.
So, the Earth also needs to spin a little more than 360 degrees to get us to noon. The 360-degree rotation is called a sidereal day while noon to noon rotation is called a solar day.
As we are probably aware that Earth has 1 moon (The Moon). But did you know there are also 2 additional asteroids locked into co-orbital orbits with Our Earth? Which are called 3753 Cruithne and 2002 AA29.
Earth’s atmosphere is made of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and trace amounts of other gases including carbon dioxide, argon, and neon. We give credit to the plant life on Earth for generating large amounts of oxygen on earth.
Earth’s Ozone layer has a special kind of oxygen that helps to absorb the harmful UV rays from the Sun.
The atmosphere acts as a protective barrier that shields the Earth from the impacts of meteoroids of comets and asteroids as many burn up before they have a chance to hit Earth’s surface.
The magnetic field of Earth is super incredibly powerful and also plays a very important part in protecting our planet from the effects of solar wind.
It is also thought that the Earth’s magnetic field is due to the it’s core, that is made up of nickel-iron, combined with the fast rotation of the Earth.
